IMP C FVL MACRIANVS P F AVG, laureate, cuirassed bust right / ROMAE AETERNAE, Roma seated left above shield, holding Victory and spear. RIC 2 (R4). Cohen 10 (Paris, 2,000 Fr.). Göbl, MIR 36, 43, 44, no. 1738a (2 specimens). Extremely rare: apparently only the sixth known aureus of Macrianus, and the third known with this reverse type. Scrape in hair and several scratches on reverse, yet virtually mint state and probably the finest of the six recorded aurei of Macrianus, several of which are pierced The two previously published aurei of Macrianus with this reverse type are: (1) a holed specimen in Paris, illustrated as Cohen 10 and quite probably from the same dies as the present specimen; (2) the Trau Collection piece (3023), which is also holed and shares the same reverse die as our example. The three other known aurei of Macrianus have the reverse types CONSERVATRICI AVGG, Diana (Göbl 1729i, two specimens, the illustrated one being in the BM), and VICTORIA AVGG (Göbl 1744a, unique in Berlin).
