Description ***Please be sure to check our website for RECENT ADDITIONS at historicalcoins.com*** [Image] Lucius Verus. 161-169 AD. Æ Dupondius (12.34 gm). IMP CAES L AVREL VERVS AVG, radiate head right / CONCORDIA AVGVSTOR TR P COS II SC, Verus and Marcus Aurelius clasping hands. RIC III 1292; Cohen 33. Nice VF, light green patina. 718156. Lucius Verus, joint Emperor with Marcus Aurelius, was the son of Hadrian's first intended successor, Aelius Caesar, who died before he could assume the throne. Verus was a handsome, fun-loving chap who did not take well to the burdens of government. In 162, he marched off to war against the Parthians, only to spend most of his time wallowing in the fleshpots of Antioch while his generals and armies did the fighting. He seems to have had a good heart, though, and was well-loved by the Roman people. His premature death of a stroke was greeted with sincere universal mourning. Marcus Aurelius' son Commodus seems to have modeled his pleasure-loving personality on that of Verus, rather than on his stoical father, though he utterly lacked Verus' noble character and heart.
