Lucius Verus, AR Denarius, L VERVS AVG ARMENIACUS, laureate head of Lucius Verus, facing right. / TR P V IMP II COS II, Roma, the city goddess of Rome, walks left, holding Victoria, the personification of victory, and a trophy. This Denarius is one of many commemoratives of the victory over Armenia, and was issued between December, 164 and August, 165, portraying Verus at the height of his career, only four years before his death. Mint State, beautiful mint luster, rare so nice! RSC 270, RIC III 537, BMC IV 381, RCV 5357, (3.5 gm.). From my personal collection. Lucius Ceionius Commodus was named for his father, who was adopted by Hadrian as his heir in 136, and given the name Aelius. However, Aelius did not inherit the Throne of Rome because he died prematurely from tuberculosis. Hadrian then adopted Antoninus Pius to succeed him, with the proviso that Antoninus adopt the young Lucius and Marcus Aurelius, as a future ruler. When Antoninus succeeded Hadrian, he made Marcus his heir apparent as Caesar, and when Marcus became Emperor, he proclaimed Lucius Verus as Augustus. This made them the first joint rulers of the vast Roman Empire, a system that was limited in its success by the war with Parthia, plague brought back to Rome by its returning army - and by the well-reported easy living Lucius Verus preferred.
