Description Classical Cash and [Image] present: [Image] [Image] ORC9546 Licinius "usurper Valens portrait" EF Licinius I, Æ3, (3.32g) 316 to early 317 AD, Alexandria Mint, IMP C VAL LICIN LICINIVS P F AVG Laureate head of Valens (?) right. / IOVI CONSERVATORI AVGG Jupiter standing, head left, holding Victory on globe, eagle with wreath at feet, K to left, W X B to right, ALE in exergue. RIC (Alexandria) 18b(R). EF, dark brown patina, some silvering on fields. A puzzling piece from a mint controlled by Licinius I during Civil War I between the disagreeing co-rulers. RIC notes "the bronzes conclusively establish the date of Civil War I as 316 AD". RIC continues, "As a rule, the sovereign of the mint in question is numerically best represented on the coins. . ." The general Aurelius Valerius Valens had been appointed co-emperor by Licinius prior to a battle against Constantine I. However, after the battle, as one of the terms of the treaty of Serdica, Valens was put to death. The coins of Valens so closely resemble those of Licinius and Constantine that their authenticity has been questioned. Perhaps coins of Valens are altered coins of Licinius I (Rass. Num. 1935, p384.) Current thinking is that the Valens coins are genuine but rare. The issue called "iii" by RIC includes the term AVGG indicating that two Augustii were recognized. RIC notes, "In the course of a single mark we have the rupture between Constantine and Licinius, the appointment of Valens, the restoration of friendly relations between East and West manifest in the dethronement of Valens, and the elevation of the sons of Constantine and Licinius to princely rank." With its sharp-nosed, mustachioed and lightly bearded visage, the portrait on this piece more closely resembles that of Valens, than that of Constantine I from other mints. cf RIC plate 24, #19 for a similar portrait (of Valens). Certainly the same hand, who was familiar with the appearance of Licinius, cut both dies. Can this portrait be considered that of Valens on a coin of Licinius? More likely it is the other way round.
