     Julia Soaemias, mother of Elagabalus. 218-222 AD. Æ As (10.63
     gm). Diademed and draped bust right / Venus seated left, holding
     apple and sceptre; small child at her feet to left. RIC IV 407
     (Elagabalus); BMCRE 387 note (Elagabalus); Cohen 19. VF, brown
     patina, rough surfaces. Scarce. 715574.

     Ex Cornelius Vermuele Collection (purchased from Baldwins,
     October 1953).

     Julia Soaemias seems to have occupied a minor role in the
     Matriarchy that ran Rome during the reign of her son Elagabalus,
     most affairs of state being dictated by her mother, the
     formidable Julia Maesa. Soaemias seems to have been something of
     a proto-feminist, organizing a separate Roman Senate for women,
     although they apparently spent most of their time debating
     fashion trends.
