Description This piece was minted in the name of Julia Maesa, who was the grandmother of both Elagabalus and Severus Alexander. She was largely responsible for the rebellion which overthrew Macrinus and restored the Severan dynasty to power. She survived the assassination of Elagabalus, and died in 225 AD, during the reign of Alexander. The obverse of this type depicts the diademed & draped bust of Julia Maesa facing right, with legends IVLIA.MAESA.AVGVSTA. The reverse features Pudicitia seated left, holding sceptre, with legends PVDICITIA.SC. Coin shows some minor surface porosity, green patina, and a lacquered reverse area with museum number and the remains of an old paper mounting strip, but otherwise grades F/AF, with clear devices and partial legends. Coin was formerly part of the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts, who recently deaccessioned their ancient coin holdings. This piece was number 27130. A decent and very affordable former museum example of this scarcer type, catalouged as Sear 2187. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders of $20 or more. For more ancients, please visit my WWW page at http://www.philly.infi.net/~mdgeary/ .
