No.43. Maroneia. Julia Domna. Æ 23 (3 Assaria). Circa A.D. 198-217. Obv: IOYLIA DOMNA CEB, Draped bust right. Countermark: vase or cantharos (?) in circular punch (on bust, below chin). Rev: MAPWN EITWN . Naked figure of Dionysus standing, facing left, holding bunch of grapes in right hand, arrows and drapery in left. Ref: Howgego 485; BMC -; Moushmov 3966. Grade: good Fine, brown-grey patina. Countermark VF. Die Axis: 30°. Weight: 8.15 g. Very Rare. Howgego (1985) notes only two specimens of this coin, the countermark of which has not been identified with any certainty. Overall, the imperial coinage of Maroneia was very limited, this being one of the rarer cities of Thrace. The same type was also struck for Caracalla. Contributed by Henrik Agndal, May, 2003.
