Berk: http://www.vcoins.com/ancient/harlanjberk/store/dynamicIndex.asp Julia Domna, Unique Aureus Wife of Septimius Severus, Unique Aureus, Rome, c. 205 AD, 7.63g. Calicó-2628 (this coin), BM-50 note, C-122 (200 Fr.), RIC-565. Obv: IVLIA AVGVSTA Bust draped r. Rx: MATER DEVM Cybele seated l. between two lions, resting elbow on drum and holding branch and scepter. An overweight specimen, and apparently unique: this is the only aureus known to C. Clay for Julia's second use of this MATER DEVM reverse type, with scepter under Cybele's left arm, c. 205 AD. This type is common on denarii, rare on middle bronzes, not yet attested on sestertii, and, as stated, so far unique on our aureus. The same type but without the scepter had been struck about ten years earlier, in 195 AD: it is common on denarii, sestertii, and middle bronzes, and rare on aurei, e.g. BM-50 pl. 28.6. Cohen-122 describes the aureus of this type with scepter, but apparently only in error, since he cites the BM coin which in fact omits the scepter. An earlier issue of this coin showed Cybele without a scepter. This coin issued 10 years after the first issue has a scepter and is unique. The obverse is struck in high relief of the best possible style. Choice Mint State Price US$ 17,000.00 euro 12,904.80 £ 8,682.73 AUD$ 21,622.43 CHF 20,787.24 CAD$ 19,912.10 Rates for 3/1/2007
