Julia Domna was the wife of Septimius Severus and mother to Caracalla and Geta. She is said to have been a woman of brilliant intellect, and Severus frequently consulted her on important matters, and valued her advice highly. She remained loyal to her family even in the face of the difficulties between Caracalla and Geta, and would take her own life in 217 AD, following the death of Caracalla, without whom she felt her situation to be hopeless. The obverse of this type depicts the draped bust of Julia Domna facing right, with legends IVLIA.PIA.FELIX.AVG. The reverse features Julia Domna standing front, head left, holding olive branch and sceptre, with legends MAT.AVGG.MAT.SEN. These legends mark the award to Julia Domna of the rather impressive titles of Mother of the Senate and Mother of the Country. Coin grades Good VF, with bold devices and legends all around, nice original colour with some of the original mint lustre evident, and a lovely portrait of Julia Domna.
