Description Extremely Rare Gold Aureus of Emperor Hostilian! [Image] Hostilian. 251 A.D. The younger son of emperor Trajan Decius and Herennia Etruscilla, Hostilian was the lone male survivor of his family after his father and brother were killed in an ambush on the Danubian front during the battle of Abrittus. When this event occurred in June or July of 251, Hostilian was in Rome, maintaining the fortunes of the family. He had been given the rank of Caesar a year or so earlier. His older brother Herennius Etruscus was raised to Augustus around June of 251 and ruled jointly with their father until their deaths in battle. In the immediate aftermath of Abrittus, the Danubian legions proclaimed Trebonianus Gallus as the new emperor and he bought a hasty peace with the Goths, one that was not particularly favorable to Rome. Gallus marched back to Rome to receive the confirmation of the senate and met with Hostilian to arrange a power sharing arrangement. Hostilian was raised to the rank of Augustus in July of 251 and embarked on his reign as co-emperor. Their joint rule was brief, however, as Hostilian died of the plague that was raging the empire, sometime in the autumn of 251. There is a considerable paucity of information on the rule of Hostilian, as he reigned in an extremely volatile era. Even the date of his death is uncertain. Mint of Rome. About Uncirculated. R.I.C. IV, 183a. Coins of Hostilian as Augustus are very rare at Rome, particularly so the aurei. With very few known to exist, an opportunity to acquire a coin of the utmost rarity awaits. Reverse of Hostilian standing left, wearing military attire, holding wand in right hand and transverse spear in left hand.
