                                Description

            Hostilian Antoninianus

            Hostilian, AD 251. A silver antoninianus attributed as RIC
            181d.

            Obverse: Radiate, draped bust right. Legend is C VALENS
            HOSTIL MES QVINTVS NC.

            Reverse: Hostilian standing left, holding inverted spear and
            standard. Legend is PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS.

            History: GAIVS VALENS HOSTILIANVS MESSIVS QVINTVS was born
            about 235 to Herennia Cupressenia Etruscilla and Gaius
            Messius Quintus Decius, the future Emperor Trajan Decius. He
            had an older brother named Herennius Etruscus. Decius became
            Emperor in August, 249, and in 250 he and Etruscus embarked
            on a campaign against the Goths, while Hostilian stayed in
            Rome. Hostilian was named Caesar in early 251, and
            co-Augustus with Trebonianus Gallus after Etruscus and Decius
            were slain by the Goths at Abrittus in July, 251. Hostilian
            died of plague four months later in November, 251.
