His father was forced to the battlefield by the invading Goths, and after some success, promoted Herennius to Augustus. Hostilian then became Caesar, and next in line of succession, and soon after, his elder brother was killed in battle, along with his father (the first Roman Emperor to suffer such a fate). Hostilian was raised to Augustus by Trebonianus Gallus, but died soon after, from the plague.
