The younger son of Theodosius, Honorius unfortunately showed very little of his father's great ability. During his reign, the real power in the empire resided with his general, Stilicho, whose daughter Honorius later married. This reign witnessed the beginning of the final collapse of the western division of the empire, with barbarians devestating Gaul, which had no Roman army to oppose them. ONly the skill of Stilicho kept the Visigoths at bay in Italy, but when the great general was executed in a palace intrigue, Italy was at the mercy of Alaric, and Honorius remained helplessly at Ravenna while Rome was besieged three times by the Goths and finally sacked in August 410. The Visigoths withdrew from Italy in 412, and the ensuing years were a period of some recovery in the western half of the empire, thanks lagrely to the efforts of the great general Constantius. The feeble son of Theodosius finally expired at Ravenna in August of 423, after an inglorious reign of 30 years. The obverse of this type depicts the diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Honorius, with legends D.N.HONORIVS.P.F.AVG. The reverse features Roma seated left on cuirass, holding Victory on globe and sceptre, with legends VIRTVS.ROMANORVM. The mint/oficina mark MDPS appears in the exergue. Coin shows some striking weakness, but otherwise grades Near EF, with clear to bold devices where struck up, and some of the original mint lustre still evident. A very nice example of this scarce late Roman silver type, catalouged as RSC-59b. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. Visa/MC now accepted for purchases over $20. Member ANA, PAN.
