Publius Aelius Hadrianus had a successful military career, and married wisely - into Emperor Trajan's family. Hadrian was proclaimed as Trajan's heir, but (perhaps significantly) not until after the Emperor died. With the army supporting him, the Senate acquiesced, and Hadrian began a long reign, noted for extensive travel to all corners of the Empire, the building of extensive defensive frontier fortifications, and as the Golden Age of Roman law.
