            Hadrian. (117-138 AD). Silver cistophoric tetradrachm (10.17 gm). 
            Ionia, Smyrna. HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS P P, bare head right / COS III, 
            eagle standing front on thunderbolt, wings spread, head right. 
            Metcalf Type 31. BMCRE 1079. Cohen 427 corr. (citing BM, 50 Fr.) RIC 
            516. Scarce: ten specimens known to Metcalf, five of those struck 
            from the same obverse die as this coin; the reverse die not in 
            Metcalf. Overstruck on a cistophorus of Mark Antony and Octavia, RPC 
            2201. About extremely fine. 

            The back of Antony’s head and NIVS IMP COS D from his titles are 
            visible below and to the left of the eagle, while the top of 
            Octavia’s head and her face and the coils of the snake before her 
            portrait appear in Hadrian’s hair and in the left field on the 
            obverse.
