                  Hadrian. Silver cistophoric tetradrachm 



             



            Hadrian. (117-138 AD). Silver cistophoric tetradrachm (10.63 gm). 
            Syria, Hieropolis. HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS P P, bare-headed, draped bust 
            right / COS III, Apollo standing right, holding lyre and plectrum. 
            Metcalf Type 53 (21 specimens). BMCRE 1054. Cohen 285 corr. (30 
            Fr.). RIC 482. From the same obverse die as Metcalf’s pl. 17, 248, 
            but from a new reverse die. Overstruck on a cistophorus of Mark 
            Antony and Octavia, RPC 2201. Extremely fine. 

            VS IMP COS DE and leaves of the encircling ivy wreath from the 
            undertype’s obverse are visible at 2:00 to 5:00 before Hadrian’s 
            portrait; while on the reverse, the top of Octavia’s portrait can be 
            made out in the field between Apollo’s lyre and the III of the 
            legend.
