              ROMAN PROVINCIAL 'DUAL-BUST' OF GORDIAN III & SERAPIS

                               (Provincial - 25mm)
                                  238 - 244 CE
                       Obv:  Gordian III & Serapis facing.
        Rev:  Serapis standing left, raising his right arm and holding a
                                    scepter.
         Gordian III was only 13 when declared emperor in 238, but ruled
           capably under the guidance of his first praetorian prefect,
        Timisitheus. He was not so fortunate with his second prefect, M.
           Julius Philipus (Philip I), who intrigued against the young
          emperor almost from the start, finally undermining the army's
        loyalty to Gordian to the extent that he was deposed and murdered
                                     in 244.
            These "Dual Busts" are hard to come by especially in this
                                   condition.
               Grading is too subjective, so please use the scan.
