Gordian III, Nikopolis. Unsold at $150. Aug 08 2003 a superb bronze colonial coin of the Roman emperor Gordian III, 238-244 B.C., which was struck at Nicopolis, Moesia Inferior. It is 25-27 mm in diameter. The obverse shows Gordian’s laureate and draped bust right. The reverse features a splendid eagle, with wings outspread, holding a wreath in its beak and standing on a thunderbolt. The coin has a small die break in the field in front of Gordian’s bust, and has the usual "centering hole," for smoothing the flan prior to striking in ancient times, but it is a magnificent "EF," with a wonderful greenish-black patina! Greek Imperial/Roman colonial coins are rarely found in such superb condition. The catalogue reference is AMNG(Pick) 2099(var)
