Gordian III. 238-244 AD. Æ 26mm (8.60 gm). Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / Kybele (Dea Caelestis) seated left on lion, riding right, holding tympanon and sceptre; a Korybant (or Kabiris) wielding a spear and sword defends her at right. Jurukova 570 (V248/R554); SNG Copenhagen -; BMC Thrace -; cf, Mionnet Supp. II pg. 329, 778 (Dionysos seated on panther, similar pose); cf. Lindgren III A65A (same). VF, medium brown patina, partial obverse brockage. Estimate $75. The formal characteristics of this reverse type make it strongly resemble the Dionysos reverse where he is seated on the back of a panther. The panther is always rendered similarly to a lion, but on this unusual reverse, the figure is obviously a lion. For confirmation of the Kybele/Dea Caelestis attribution, please see the similar reverse types on the Denarii of Septimius Severus RIC IV pt. 1, 267; RSC 219a and Caracalla RIC IV pt. 1, 130; RSC 97.
