            Gordian III, Lot of 3 antoniniani, Antioch mint, second series. 
            (238-244 AD). . Comprising (a) Silver antoninianus, 3.70 gm, 
            Antioch, 242 AD, IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, bust radiate, draped, 
            cuirassed right / VICTORIA AVG, Victory advancing right, holding 
            wreath and palm. Bland 76 (7 specimens). RIC 217b (R ). Cohen 362. A 
            scarce reverse type, with both this and the later bust type. (b) A 
            similar coin, 4.29 gm, from the same reverse die as the last piece, 
            but with the later “cuirassed only” bust type. Bland 77 (8 
            specimens). RIC 217e (R ). Cohen 362. An interesting die link 
            between the earlier and the later variant of this scarce type. (c) 
            Silver antoninianus, 3.69 gm, Antioch, 242–244 AD, obverse as (b) 
            with bust cuirassed only, reverse same type too, but legend VICTORIA 
            GORDIANI AVG. Bland 84 (14 specimens). RIC 219e (R ). Cohen 380. A 
            scarce type “in which the spirit of Victory is claimed as a special 
            personal possession of the Emperor” (Mattingly, RIC, p. 13). THREE 
            COINS IN LOT. Extremely fine, very fine and fine.
