Description This coin was minted during the reign of Gordian III, who ruled from 238-244 AD. Gordian III was only 13 when declared emperor in 238, but ruled capably under the guidance of his first praetorian prefect, Timisitheus. He was not so fortunate with his second prefect, M. Julius Philippus, who intrigued against the young emperor almost from the start, finally undermining the army's loyalty to Gordian to the extent that he was deposed and murdered in 244. The obverse of this piece depicts the radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Gordian III facing right, with legends IMP.GORDIANVS.PIVS.FEL.AVG. The reverse features Fortuna seated left, wheel under seat, with legends FORT.REDVX. This type refers to the vows that were offered for the safe return of Gordian from the Persian campaign. Coin shows original dark colour with golden highlights, and grades a nice VF, with clear devices and legends. A nice original example of the type, catalouged as RSC-97. All coins guaranteed genuine without restrictions. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. Visa/MC accepted for orders of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN. For more ancients, please visit our WWW page at http://www.philly.infi.net/~mdgeary/ .
