Description Gold Solidus of Roman Emperor Gordian III! [Image] Gordian III. 238-244 A.D. Born around 225 A.D. into a prominent Roman family, Gordian was the grandson of emperor Gordian I and the nephew of Gordian II. The joint emperors who succeeded the first two Gordians made Gordian III Caesar shortly after his relatives perished in 238 A.D. after a reign of only three weeks. Gordian was proclaimed emperor after the deaths of Balbinus and Pupienus, who reigned only 98 days themselves. Gordian was about 13 years old at his elevation to the throne. After suppressing a revolt in Africa in 240 A.D., Gordian appointed Timesitheus as his commander of the praetorian guard, in addition to marrying his daughter in 241. It was a brief honeymoon for Gordian, however, as he and Timesitheus had to attend right away to an invasion of Syria by the Sasanian king, Shapur I. The armies of Gordian and Shapur engaged in the spring of 243, with the Romans achieving rapid victories. The success was costly, however, as Timesitheus died in the midst of the campaign under mysterious circumstances. Gordian continued to lead his armies against the Sasanians until his own death at Zaitha in Mesopotamia sometime in March of 244. Gordian's death at 19 was also something of a mystery, as conflicting reports had him dying in battle or as a result of a coup by Philip the Arab. Mint of Rome. Nice Extremely Fine. R.I.C.IV, 97, struck 241-243 A.D. Very scarce issue of Gordian III in gold. Reverse of Sol standing front, head left, raising right hand and holding globe. NO RESERVE!!!
