He was given the rank of Caesar by the joint emperors Balbinus and Pupienus, and proclaimed Augustus after their murders. He was then only 15 years old. He supressed a rebellion successfully in Africa in A.D. 240, and did a successful campaign against the Persians in A.D. 242. He was under great influence of his praetorian prefect Timesitheus. After this prefect's death in 244, Gordian's power was undermined by Timesitheus' successor Philip. Philip had Gordian killed by his own soldiers, and became the new emperor.
