Obverse: IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian right. Reverse: AETERNITATI AVG, Sol, radiate, standing left holding globe and raising hand. The reverse legend translates to "Eternal Augustus". Background: Gordian III came to power in 238 AD, a period marked by near total anarchy following the reign of Commodus some 45 years earlier. At first he ruled with his Father and Grandfather, who both had died, Gordian II in battle and Gordian I by suicide upon hearing of the death of his son. Gordian III was only 13 years old when he first came to power, but despite his youth was able to administer the empire and command the troops. He was assassinated in 244 AD, the result of a plot by his praetorian guard. References: Mattingly & Sydenham, Roman Imperial Coinage, Volume IV, number 83.
