From the Gemini IV Auction, Closed January 8, 2008. Lot # 454 - Auction is closed.Estimate: US$500 / Price Realized: US$725 Gordian III. Silver denarius Gordian III. (238-244 AD). Silver denarius (2.90 gm). Rome, 239 AD. IMP C M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, bust laureate, draped, cuirassed right / P M TR P II COS P P, Fides standing left, holding standard and transverse scepter. Unpublished apart from this specimen (see pedigree below). Extremely fine. Ex Triton V, 2002, George His Collection, lot 2075; ex CNG XXXVII, 29 September 1993, lot 1079. In 240 Gordian III struck two large issues of denarii (see lot 485 below), but denarii produced at other times of his reign are very rare, on a par with the denarii struck during the reign of his successor, Philip I. Our coin of early 239 is apparently unique as a denarius; not in RIC; not in A. Jurging, “Die erste Emission Gordians III.,” JNG 45, 1995; not in Berk photofile; only this specimen in CoinArchives. © 2005-2008 Gemini, LLC | Email: info@geminiauction.com ...
