Comes with the original inventory tag marked $3,250 from R.M. Smythe, NY, NY. Marcus Antonius Gordianus Sempronianus Romanus was a wealthy landowner of noble lineage, and Senator, Consul, and Governor of Africa. Despite his age, this octogenarian's prominence led to his being chosen by tax rebels as a rival Augustus to Maximinus, in March, 238. He chose his son as Augustus, and their agents went to Rome and assassinated the praetorian prefect. However, Maximinus did not have to deal with the usurpers; Capellianus, the Governor of the adjacent Numidian province attacked and defeated Gordian II, leaving the elder Gordian to commit suicide after only a three-week reign. NOTE TO BIDDERS: I am listing this group of very rare Emperors on behalf of a long-time collector, who purchased them years ago from reputable dealers, and there is no question of their authenticity.
