Description This piece was minted in the name of Geta Caesar, who served under his father, Septimius Severus, from 198-209 AD. It was the intention of Severus that Geta rule jointly with Caracalla, but the savage and jealous nature of Caracalla would have none of this. Relations between the two brothers were strained at best, and when Caracalla called a conference in 212, allegedly for the purpose of putting their differences aside, he instead had Geta murdered. It is said that Geta died in the arms of his mother, Julia Domna, who was also in attendance. Geta's murder was the start of a massive purge of his adherents, in which some 20,000 people are said to have lost their lives. The obverse of this piece depicts the bare-headed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Geta as an older boy facing right, with legends P.SEPTIMIVS.GETA.CAES. The reverse features Minerva standing front, head left, leaning on shield and holding raversed spear, with legends PONTIF.COS. This piece AVF, with clear devices and legends all around. A nice example of the type, catalouged as RSC-104. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds.
