Description This piece was minted in the name of Geta Caesar, who served under his father, Septimius Severus, from 198-209 AD. It was the intention of Severus that Geta rule jointly with Caracalla, but the savage and jealous nature of Caracalla would have none of this. Relations between the two brothers were strained at best, and when Caracalla called a conference in 212, allegedly for the purpose of putting their differences aside, he instead had Geta murdered. It is said that Geta died in the arms of his mother, Julia Domna, who was also in attendance. Geta's murder was the start of a massive purge of his adherents, in which some 20,000 people are said to have lost their lives. The obverse of this piece depicts the boy's draped bust of Geta facing right, with legends P.SEPT.GETA.CAES.PONT. The reverse features Geta in military dress standing half-left, holding branch and reversed spear, with legends PRINC.IVVENT. Coin shows a flan crack at K-5 of the reverse, but otherwise grades a nice VF, with bold devices and clear to bold legends all around. A very nice example of the type, catalouged as RSC-159. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted on orders of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN. For more ancients, please visit our WWW site at http://www.philly.infi.net/~mdgeary/ .
