Geta was born at Rome in Ad 189. In AD 198, he was given the rank of Caesar at the same time as his older brother, Caracalla, was raised to the rank of Augustus. Geta was given the rank of Augustus in AD 209 at the age of 20, it being Severus' clear intention that the brothers should inherit the throne jointly and share the rule of the empire. The savage and jealous nature of Caracalla, however, allow for such an arrangement and Geta was murdered in February, AD 212, after only twelve months of joint-rule. There followed a vigorous persecution of all followers and supporters of Geta, in which over twenty thousand people were put to death by order of Caracalla. After his death, Geta was subjected to Damnatio Memoriae - official condemnation of his memory - in which his images and inscriptions were systematically destroyed and removed from all monuments and art. This is a beautiful coin of a youthful Emperor.
