Description Classical Cash and OldRomanCoins.com present: [Look at THIS!] [Look at THIS!] Germanicus, dupondius, F-VF Germanicus, AE dupondius (15.74g) Time of Caligula (37-40 AD) or Tiberius (17-19 AD) GERMANIC[VS] CAESAR Germanicus in triumphal quadriga right. / SIGNIS RECTP DEVICTIS GERM Germanicus standing left, arm raised in salute, holding eagle-tipped scepter, S C at sides. RIC(Gaius)57, Vagi512. Good F / VF, brown tone, a couple of small pits. Is this an issue under the emperor Tiberius? These never fit well into the coins issued by Caligula because there is no mention of the emperor, nor any commemoration of the death of Germanicus. Were these issued after the triumph in 17 AD and just prior to his death in 19 AD. There is precedence for coins honoring the heir. When Tiberius was heir to Augustus, many asses, dupondii and sestertii were struck as well as rare denarii and aureii. And Augustus was not fond of Tiberius. Tiberius also issued asses for his next heir, Drusus, who was also not in his favor. Provincial coinage of Germanicus as heir is fairly common. Hoard analysis should be able to distinguish between a coin issued in 17-19 AD and one from 37-40 AD. This shouldn't be a lingering question.
