Antoninianus (2.85 gm). Struck 258 AD. Mediolanum mint. GALLIENVS AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust right / LEG IIXX VI P VI F, capricorn right. RIC V pt. 1, 362; RSC 542a. VF, porous. Estimate $200 RIC notes that the 18th Legion was destroyed with Varus and never reformed, and that the legend IIXX is the moneyer's blunder for XXII, the capricorn being the badge of the 22nd Legion. According to King (C.E. King, "The Legionary Antoniniani of Gallienus from Milan," RIN (1983), pp. 103-131), the "legionary issues of Gallienus are relatively rare, and even in those hoards where they occur in significant numbers like the Gibraltar find (244 specimens) or Cunetio (232 pieces), they form only a minute percentage of the total, less than half of one percent in both instances" (see Lt. Col. H.D. Gallwey, "A hoard of third-century antoniniani from Southern Spain," NC (1962), pp. 335-406; E. Besley and R. Bland, The Cunetio Treasure, nos. 1434-1503).
