Vagi 808 ($1250-1750 in VF) RIC 131var. (Victory left); BMC 246; RSC 318. VF, very rare. RSC notes that this is a "Posthumous issue." The seventh of the so-called Twelve Caesars, Servius Sulpicius Galba, had an illustrious public record, and was serving as Governor of Nearer Spain, though past the age of 70, when his life was changed forever by fate. General discontent over Nero's rule flared into open revolt in Gaul, and though it was put down, and he commanded but one legion, Galba's troops proclaimed him Augustus. The Senate agreed, Nero committed suicide, and Galba was Emperor - but no for long. He was as stingy as he was wealthy (very), and alienated those who expected bribes and largesse, in particular the Praetorian Guard, who conspired with Otho, and beheaded Galba and his chosen successor in the Forum.
