Faustina the Elder, Posthumous AR Denarius, DIVA AVG FAVSTINA, draped bust of Faustina, facing right. / CONCORDIAE, Antoninus Pius, togate, stands, facing right, holding a roll, and clasps hands with Faustina, who stands, facing left, veiled and draped, holding a scepter. A sentimental issue, struck after she died in 141 A.D., and before her daughter, also named Faustina, was given the title of Augusta, in 147, upon the birth of her first child. Mint State, beautiful mint luster, rare as such! RSC 159, RIC III (Antoninus Pius) 381b, BMC IV (Antoninus Pius) 298, RCV 4592, (4.0 gm.).

Annia Galeria Faustina, daughter of Marcus Annius Verus, married a young man (Titus Aurelius Fulvus Boionius Antoninus) between 110-115 A.D. Two decades later, he became Rome's Emperor, and the Senate honored her with the title of Augusta. Unfortunately, Faustina died only a few years later, in 141 A.D. The Senate deified her, complete with a temple and priestesses. In her memory, Antoninus set up a program that made loans to Italian farmers, with the interest set aside to care for orphaned girls. Pius survived her by many years, issuing many coins honoring her memory. From my personal collection.
