Description Classical Cash and OldRomanCoins.com present: [Look at THIS!] [Look at THIS!] Unique Faustina Senior gold aureus, VF Diva Faustina Senior, wife of Antoninus Pius, AV aureus, (6.52g with mount) Rome Mint, struck after her death in 141 AD, DIVA AVG FAVSTINA Draped bust right, hair in bun, struck in low relief for an aureus / CONC OR DIAE ANTONINVS PIVS standing right, holding scroll, clasping right hands with Faustina Senior standing left, holding scepter. Unpublished as an aureus, cf. RIC(Pius)381(denarius), RSC158(same), BMC466(same). Apparently unique. VF, clipped, in Victorian era bezel. The relief of the obverse die, and the previous unknown use of this reverse type on an aureus, show that denarius dies were used to strike this apparently unique aureus. This is an unusual practice for this period. PLEASE CLICK HERE to see ALL the wonderful items in this week's sale!
