Elagabalus was a priest of the sun-god Elagabalus, and this is the source of the name that this emperor is best known by today. His reign was notable for its cruelty, bloodshed, religious fanaticism, and excesses of every description, and there was general satisfaction when he was murdered on March 6, 222. The obverse of this type depicts the radiate and draped bust of Elagabalus facing right, with legends IMP.ANTONINVS.AVG. The reverse type features Providentia standing front, head left, leaning against a column, legs crossed, holding wand over globe at feet and cornucopiae. The legends read PROVID.DEORVM. Coin is struck on a slightly irregular flan, but otherwise grades VF, with clear to bold devices and legends all around. A pleasing example of this scarcer type, catalouged as RSC-243a. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders of $20 or more. Member ANA, PAN. Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [Image] Bidding Bidding is closed for this item.
