Roman Liberalitas II Denarius of ELAGABALUS Coin was minted in 219 AD, during the reign of Elagabalus, who ruled from 218-222 AD. Berytus is known today as Beirut. Elagabalus was a priest of the sun-god Elagabalus, and this is the source of the name that this emperor is best known by today. His reign was notable for its cruelty, bloodshed, religious fanaticism, and excesses of every description, and there was general satisfaction when he was murdered on March 6, 222. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate and draped bust of Elagabalus facing right, with legends IMP.ANTONINVS.AVG. The reverse type features Liberalitas standing front, head left, holding abacus and cornucopiae set on base. The legends read LIBERALITAS.AVG.II. Coin was minted to commemorate the second donative of the reign of Elagabalus, held to mark his safe return to Rome. Coin is struck a bit off center, but otherwise grades VF, with bold devices and legends where struck up. A nice example of the type, catalouged as RSC-79. CATALOGUED CATALOGUED
