Description This piece was minted during the reign of Elagabalus, who ruled from 218-222 AD. Elagabalus was the grandson of Julia Maesa, who instigated the revolt that brought him to power by spreading a false rumor that he was the illegitimate son of Caracalla, who was revered by the army. He was made a priest of the sun-god Elagabalus in his boyhood, and this is how he acquired the name by which he is known today. His reign was noted for religious fanaticism, cruelty, bloodshed, and excesses of every description, and there was a general satisfaction when he was murdered along with his mother, Julia Soaemias, on March 6, 222 AD. The obverse of this type features the laureate and draped bust of Elagabalus right, bearded, seen from the front, with legends IMP.ANTONINVS.PIVS.AVG. The reverse type features Elagabalus standing front, head left, holding patera and club, with a recumbent bull behind altar at left, star in field above. The reverse legends read INVICTVS.SACERDOS.AVG. Coin is struck a bit off center on the obverse, but otherwise grades VF, with clear to bold devices and legends all around, and a nice portrait. A pleasing example of the type, catalogued as RSC-61b. All coins guaranteed genuine without limitations. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds.
