Description Coin was minted in 220 AD, during the reign of Elagabalus, who ruled from 218-222 AD. Berytus is known today as Beirut. Elagabalus was a priest of the sun-god Elagabalus, and this is the source of the name that this emperor is best known by today. His reign was notable for its cruelty, bloodshed, religious fanaticism, and excesses of every description, and there was general satisfaction when he was murdered on March 6, 222. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate and draped bust of Elagabalus facing right, with legends IMP.ANTONINVS.PIVS.AVG. The reverse type features Sol advancing left, holding whip and raising his right hand, star in field left, with legends P.M.TR.P.III.COS.III.P.P. Coin shows a scratch on the emperor's chin, and some light surface granularity, but otherwise grades VF, with bold devices and clear legends all around. A nice example of the type, catalouged as RSC-154. Buyer pays postage/insurance, coin shipped on clearance of funds. PA residents please add appropriate sales tax. MC/Visa accepted for orders of $20 or more. For more ancients, please visit our WWW site at http://www.philly.infi.net/~mdgeary/ .
