Scarce Crocodile AE Dichalkon of DOMITIAN This piece was minted for Roman Egypt between 91 and 92 AD, during the reign of Domitian, who ruled from 81-96 AD. Domitian initially showed great promise, but was unpopular with the Senatorial nobility, and this resulted in numerous plots and conspiracies. These only served to inflame Domitian's already suspicious nature, and his last years were a time of terror and oppression. He was murdered in 96 AD, in a plot in which his own wife is said to have taken part. The obverse of this type depicts the laureate head of Domitian facing right, with no legends. The reverse features a crocodile standing right with headdress, and regnal year LI above. Coin is struck a little off center on an odd shaped flan, but otherwise grades F+/F, with devices and legends mostly clear. A nice example of this scarcer Egyptian provincial type, Milne 498.
