No.148. Flaviopolis. Domitian. Æ 28 (2 Assaria). A.D. 89/90. Obv: DOMETIANOC KAICAP. Laureate bust right. Countermark: helmeted bust of Athena right, in rectangular punch (in front of head). Rev: FLAYI OPOLEI TWN ETOYCZI. Laureate and draped bust of the Dioskuri face to face, each with star on forehead. Ref: BMC 1; Sear 861; SNG Levante 1529; Howgego 190. Grade: Fine, portrait better, dark brown patina, very minor touches of blue. Countermark Fine. Die Axis: 360°. Weight: 14.03 g. Howgego (1985) notes 21 specimens of this type of countermark. Different size coins exist, however. The letters ZI indicate that the coin was struck in year 17 of the era of Flaviopolis, i.e. AD 89/90. Ziegler (1993) notes a total of 88 coins from Flaviopolis from the reign of Domitian, ranging in denomination from ¼ to 2 assaria. Contributed by Henrik Agndal, May, 2003.
