Domitian, as Caesar, AR Denarius, CAESAR AVG F DOMITIANVS COS VI, laureate head of Domitian, facing right. / PRINCEPS IVVENTVTIS, Vesta, the goddess of hearth and home, protectress of Roman families, enthroned, facing left, holding a scepter and Palladium; struck 79 A.D. Nice VF+, Sear/RCV 2641, RSC 378, RIC 244, (3.4 gm.).

The twelfth (and last) of the so-called Twelve Caesars, Titus Flavius Domitianus, was frustrated for years, as the younger brother of the heir apparent, Titus. Titus won the military victories and enjoyed power, while Domitian cooled his heels, and dabbled in the arts. Once Titus died, Domitian wasted little time establishing himself as a military hero, suppressing the German populations between the upper Rhine and Danube rivers. He ingratiated himself with the troops, but managed to offend many in Rome's upper class society, inspiring many assassination plots. He fell victim to the last one, in which by then even his wife was involved.
