AE Dupondius 22mm, listed in RIC 11 as RARITY 2. Didius Julianus is infamous for winning the Roman Empire via auction. After the murder of Pertinax in March, 193 AD, the Praetorian Guard offered the throne to the highest bidder. Julianus, a wealthy aristocrat and Senator with a fairly distinguished record, won the prize with a bid of 25,000 sesterces per man, 5,000 over the next highest bidder, the city prefect Sulpicianus. His dubious means of gaining the throne won him no friends--he was uniformly hated by the Senate, the people, even the Praetorians he'd bought. Septimius Severus, provincial governor of Pannonia with three legions at his disposal, saw his opportunity and marched on Rome. Didius dithered, declaring Severus a public enemy and trying desperately to whip the Praetorians into fighting shape. No one listened to him. As Severus approached, Didius was murdered by a Praetorian centurion to prevent a bloodbath. His 25,000-per-man investment had bought him 66 days of ineffectual rule, soon followed by four years of civil war.
