Marcus Didius Severus Julianus, scion of a prominent family was born in 133 A.D., and grew up in the household of Marcus Aurelius' mother. Such a childhood propelled him to success, as Praetor, legionary commander, governor, and Consul. He survived false accusations of conspiring against Commodus, and subsequently served as Senator and Proconsul of Africa, when Pertinax was proclaimed Augustus after the assassination of Commodus. Didius journeyed to Rome, and when Pertinax was beheaded by the Praetorian guard, he engaged in a bidding war against Sulpicianus for the Throne of Rome, ultimately prevailing with a colossal bid of 25,000 sestertii per guard. Previous Emperors had distributed cash upon their accession, but none before had the audacity to offer money in advance, as a bribe. The Senate, intimidated by the guard, confirmed their choice. But the people were disgusted by the manner by which their new Emperor was imposed on them. And other ambitious men (Pescennius Niger, Clodius Albinus, and Septimius Severus) who had armies at their disposal heard opportunity knocking. Severus began marching toward Rome, and Didius frantically began building defenses, but his newly-gained unpopularity, combined with eroding support from the Praetorians, proved to be his undoing. The Senate, which had caved in and elevated Didius to the purple only two months before also heard opportunity knocking, and proclaimed Septimius Emperor, sealing the fate of the 60 year old Didius, who was executed in the palace, after only a 66-day reign.
