Delmatius, AE 18.29 mm, Thessalonica. Obv: FL DALMATIVS NOB C, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right. Rev: GLORI-A EXER-CITVS, two soldiers holding spears and shields with two standards between them, O on banner. Mintmark: SMTS delta. RIC VII Thessalonica 202 var, unlisted officina letter. SMTS Delta is an officina which is unlisted in RIC for Delmatius. Delta appears to have been reserved for Constans and Constantine I. If you compare the officina letter with the letter A you will see that the sides of the A are not very sloped, more like an H, but the officina letter is definitely triangular in shape with a definite, evenly engraved base (as opposed to two serifs accidentally joined in the middle). All the listed coins of this RIC 202 series for Delmatius are very rare: SMTSA is R5, SMTSB is R4 and SMTS gamma is R3. Contributed by George Clegg (biggyg2), Dec. 2010
