Philippopolis was described as the most beautiful of all Thracian towns. Its remains lie under the modern town of [Image] Plovdiv, Bulgaria. It was founded by Philip of Macedonia in [Image] the 4th century B.C., after he conquered a Thracian settlement, fortified it, and named it after himself. In the 1st century A.D., the Romans conquered the town, and built solid fortresses and monumental buildings, including a stadium for 30 000 spectators, an amphitheater seating 5,000 people, water reservoirs, and other public buildings decorated with multi-colored mosaics.
