HD: Unique Gold Medallion, worn Item #144821195 Currently $300.00 Ends 08/17/99, Seller henri_delger@prodigy.net Constantius II, AV 1 1/2 solidus medallion struck with solidus dies, (6.11g) Antioch Mint, issued at or after the tricennalia of Constantius II, FL IVL CONSTAN TIVS PERP AVG Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right / GLORIA REI PVBLICAE Roma and Constantinopolis enthroned, the former facing, the latter turned to the left. Between them they support a shield inscribed VOT XX MVLT XXX Roma holds spear in left hand, and right hand below shield. Constantinopolis holds scepter in left hand and rests right foot on a prow, SMANB in exergue. Apparently unpublished as a multiple. cf. C108 and RIC83b for the solidus. Near F / G. The high weight of this piece is distant from the standard solidus of 1/72 of a pound (c. 4.47g), especially considering its unusual degree of wear. Medallions of this mint and reign are known as 1 1/4 solidii, called aureus, (1/60th of a pound = c. 5.6g) and 1 1/2 solidii, called sesqui-solidus, (1/48th of a pound = c. 6.8g), as well as double solidii (1/36th of a pound = c. 9.0g), 4 1/2, and 9 solidii. All are rare. Presumably the multiples were struck for presentation to senior officials. This worn example probably weighed about 6.8 grams as made. Unique!
