Constantius II. Antioch, Syria. 337-341 AD. CONSTAN-TIVS AVG, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS, two soldiers holding spears and shields with one standard between them, bull's head on banner, SMANBI in ex. RIC VIII Antioch 49 var (emblem in standard instead of usual dot or o). A rare and previously unknown variant. The bull's head possibly refers to Legio III Gallia, stationed in Syria until at least 332 AD and whose emblem was a bull. (Note also the soldiers and standards type of Lyons with a bull on the standard, poss. referring to Legio VIII stationed in Eastern France at the time.) Contributed by Dane for Eric Relph, June 2009
