After the assassinations of the usurpers Marcus and Gratianus, Constantine III was proclaimed emperor by the legions in Britain and was recognized by Honorius, but not by Theodosius and Arcadius. Constantine III defeated the local barbarians and negotiated agreements with the Alamanni and Burgundians. But his attempt to enter Italy failed. He was attacked by his own general Gerontius and Honorius' troops and was killed in 411 AD.
