AD 307-337. Trier mint, extremely rare. [R2743] Keyword R2743 Categories ROMAN EMPIRE: Constantine I (AD 307-337). AV medallion of 1 1/2 solidi (6.57 gm). Trier, summer AD 310. IMP CONSTANTINVS Metal P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine Price right, seen from behind / PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS, Constantine Items Added in armor standing right, holding transverse spear and globe, PTR in exergue. RIC 802; Cohen 409. Very rare. Nearly extremely fine PRICE: $22,500 This impressive medallion exemplifies the return to realistic portraiture that began at western mints during the reign of Constantius I. Although in lower relief, the radiate bust of Constantine is very much in the style of Trajan’s coinage of 200 years before. Even the standing figure of Constantine on the reverse is carefully and realistically proportioned. The occasion for issue is somewhat problematic as the reverse makes reference only to Constantine’s role as “Prince of Youth,” a title he had claimed since his elevation to the rank of Caesar in 306.
