Sale: Triton VIII, Lot: 1247. Closing Date: Jan 10, 2005. Estimate $300 Sold For $600 CONSTANTINE I. 307-337 AD. Æ Follis (2.35 gm, 6h). Constantinople mint. Struck 326-327 AD. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG, laureate head right / D N CONSTANTINI MAX AVG, VOT XXX, in laurel wreath; A/CONS. RIC VII -; Hunter -; Cohen -; LRBC -. Near EF, dark green patina. Unpublished reverse type for Constantinople mint. Unique. ($300) From the Malcolm W. Heckman Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 35 (20 December 1995), lot 989. (Note, the image on wildwinds shows that there are traces of a star after the CONS, thus making the mintmark correctly centered, which, without the star it would not be.) The reverse type with VOT XXX is not a new type, as it was struck at Rome, Heraclea, and Ticinum in conjunction with Constantine's vicenallia celebrations in 325-326 AD. Its place in the coinage of Constantinople is determined by the laureate head, the absence of MAX in the obverse legend, and the A/CONS star mintmark, and firmly place this coin as one of the first types struck after the opening of the mint in 326 AD.
